Excavations Through Kathak: A Poetic Exploration of Movement

Excavations through Kathak are two unique explorations that push the boundaries of Kathak using tools from dance movement therapy and embodied poetics. Since beej garage is a space to explore process, this offering will be followed by an interactive discussion with the artistes and a workshop.

An intimate dive into Kathak riyaaz as a self-reflective practice—which reveals the dancer’s inner world of thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories, and desires.

Through dance, image, and poetry, this project invites us to feel the tension of control and surrender, pain and pleasure, self and the Universal.

I started learning Kathak at 28, in 2015. I was drawn irresistibly to the form. I didn’t know why at that time, but it soon started to make sense.

In this project I attempt to capture the profound impact that Kathak has had on me. My journey, as much as it is personal is also universal. I share my emotions and discoveries in this piece, which I have strung together using the sounds of pakahwaj, flute, ghungroos and the spoken word. Movements are devised from Kathak and theatre.
